Consortium meeting

🌊 When climate meets cultural heritage

On October 9–10, 2025, our SEA-CCHange Belmont Forum consortium project gathered in Utrecht for a mid-term meeting that felt more like a shared exploration than a traditional, formal, project meeting. Researchers, heritage experts, and students from the Netherlands, Indonesia, the UK, and Ireland came together to reflect on how coastal communities respond to environmental change through science, memory, tradition, and lived experience.

We heard stories of graveyards slowly reclaimed by the sea, fisheries adapting to shifting waters, memories of water-related disasters and conservation practices rooted in ancestral knowledge. These narratives revealed how tangible and intangible heritage evolve in the face of environmental pressures.

Our Utrecht University master’s students enriched the conversation with their research on physical risk profiles, adding valuable layers to our understanding of vulnerability and resilience Lars Haverkort Matthijs Doelman Vicky Sant

🎲 A cultural heritage game led by Eva Stegmeijer (RCE the Netherlands)) helped us shift perspectives, inviting us to see climate impacts to cultural heritage through the lens of community, beyond the terminology we often use as scientists.

As we move forward, we’re building an archive of these heritage practices stories.

We’d like to thank all SEA-CCHange members for their participation and collaboration. Such an amazing team to work with. Your insights, energy, and openness made this gathering special!
